The desert is often the journey travellers remember most. To choose the right programme, look at the whole route: where you leave from, the road stages, the stops on the way and where your experience takes place. The travel between destinations is part of the programme, so it deserves the same attention as the camp or activity.
Understand which desert experience you are choosing
Ask the operator to name the exact location and describe its landscape. A short desert-side experience and a multi-day Sahara route are different journeys. Compare the planned activities and the amount of travel, and use the route markers on the programme page to understand the proposed stops.
Check the night as carefully as the day
- What kind of overnight arrangement is included, if any?
- Are sleeping arrangements shared or private?
- Which meals, drinks and transfers are included?
- What is optional, such as a camel ride, quad activity or photography service?
- Where does the route finish and is return travel included?
Tell the team what your group needs
Share the ages of children, any mobility needs and the level of activity you are comfortable with. Ask specifically about getting into vehicles, walking on the terrain and access at overnight stops. Check the current weather and follow the local operator’s instructions about clothing, water and equipment. A clear conversation before departure gives everyone a better picture of the journey.
Choose a desert route for the experience you want, with enough time to enjoy the places between the start and the dunes.
